BIRTH specific questions:
What is the responsibility of your organisation within the Project. As a broadcast company, SWR is providing assets to the Online Archive Pool of the BIRTH project. From programme schedules, announcements, information about production staff, stars of that time to photos from "behind the scenes" or about famous pioneers of SWF and SDR television, early channel signals and signs, clippings from television plays, news programmes, live-broadcasts of sports events an many more.

As a project partner, SWR participates actively in preparing and building up the Online Archive Pool of BIRTH. That includes input for setting requirements, thorough research of own archives (which are in fact two archives, of SDR and of SWF), clearing of rights for online distribution and preview, encoding of digital formats from analog source materials, which are fifty years old and more. Paying tribute to the age of the archive materials, some films and 1" tapes will have to be restorated and re-recorded in advance of using them for the project. Thus, the project will support SWR's interest to preserve own archive assets. Last but not least, this Online Archive Pool for European Television Heritage has to be involved in as much activities and projects as possible. Strong co-operation with other projects and vivid participation in events concerning the 50th anniversary of television in Europe are part of the mission of all project partners.

Which historical period will be covered, and please explain the start and end date.
Historically, we intend to cover the period from 1948/49, first experiments at NWDR in Hamburg, to 1963, launch of Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF). As SDR and SWF did not began to broadcast any television content before 1953, we will provide content dating from 1953 (with exceptions from 1952, where SWF provided some input for ARD without direct transmission) to 1963.

Description of organisation:
The Südwestrundfunk (SWR) is the youngest member of ARD, the Association of Public Broadcasting Corporations in Germany. It was founded in 1998, when its two predecessors, Südwestfunk (SWF) and Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR), merged. Today the SWR is one of the largest media groups in Germany and the second largest broadcasting corporation in the ARD. One in six programmes on Germany's First TV Channel is produced by the SWR, as well as a string of top-quality programmes on the specialist channels 3sat, ARTE, Phoenix and Kinderkanal. More than 14 million people live within the broadcasting area it serves, in the states of Baden-Württemberg and Rheinland-Pfalz.

With six radio and two television channels as well as the multimedia youth programme DASDING and a varied internet presence, the SWR has plenty to offer not only to the people in Baden-Württemberg and Rheinland-Pfalz. The spectrum includes up-to-the-minute global and local information, education, culture, services and entertainment for everyone. With its programmes, the SWR fulfils its legal mandate as a public broadcasting corporation and provides its viewers and listeners with a neutral and responsible perspective of what is going on in the world. It offers orientation in the increasingly opaque world of the electronic media. It accompanies and encourages the changes in the media landscape, but also reflects critically on these developments. As public broadcasting corporation for the Länder (federal states) Baden-Württemberg and Rheinland-Pfalz, the SWR has a special mandate to connect the people in Southwest Germany. The two locally oriented radio channels (SWR1 and SWR4) and the two SüDWEST television programmes have strong regional identities. Numerous events in both states, in their regions and landscapes ensure cultural diversity. Since it was founded the SWR has been extremely well accepted and has strengthened the identification of its listeners and viewers with their station. It is also one of the major players in Germany's media landscape. Based on a modern business concept, the SWR successfully combines the different structures of the two predecessor corporations. It is also working efficiently on securing the quality of public broadcasting in the long term.
