The MEDIA Plus programme

The BIRTH project has been brought into being following a call for proposals for the MEDIA Plus programme of the European Council for pilot projects. Out of 50 proposals BIRTH has been selected together with five other projects for funding.

Official documents state the purpose of these pilot projects as follows: "The pilot projects constitute the way in which the Council Decision ensures that the MEDIA Plus programme takes account of rapid technological change. It is expected that in the next few years the use of digital technologies will make European audiovisual works more easily accessible, because of new ways of transporting audiovisual content and as a result more widely available outside their country of origin. Competitiveness of the audiovisual content industry will depend largely on the use of new technologies in the development, production and distribution stages."
