George Barnes joined the BBC in 1935 as a producer in the Talks Department where he produced a number of radio programmes. In 1946 Barnes became the first Controller of a new BBC radio station called 'The Third Programme' which still exists today as Radio Three. In 1950 he became Director of BBC Television. The key television event of his career was the televising of the coronation of Elizabeth II in June 1953.
