Philip Harben was one of the great early post war BBC television cooks. He regularly appeared on BBC television from 1946 through to 1956 in such programmes as Cookery, Cookery Lesson and What's Cooking? On one famous occasion, he took a dish from the oven and found that it wasn't cooked so he finished the programme earlier than planned. When he was asked why he ended the programme minutes early, his reply was "It wouldn't have done any good, I forgot to switch on the oven!"
